The shop floor. The site. The scene where something actually happened. In Japanese manufacturing it means one specific thing: the place where value is created — and therefore the only place worth making decisions from.

Note ·Written strictly, the romanization is genba. It is pronounced gemba — the ん shifts to an m sound before the b. English lean literature settled on the spelling that matches the sound, and so did we.
The Principle
“Go to the gemba.”
Toyota turned the word into an instruction. If you want to understand what is happening, go to where it is happening. Do not rely on the report, the dashboard, or the account manager's summary. Stand where the work is and look at it.
The related term is 現地現物 —genchi genbutsu — go to the actual place, examine the actual thing. It exists because manufacturing problems have a habit of disappearing on the way to the conference room. A part that measures fine on the bench measures differently on the fixture. A cycle time on the quote sheet is not the cycle time on the third shift.
There is a Japanese business term for the capability this builds: 現場力 — genba-ryoku, roughly “shop-floor strength.” It describes an organization whose ability to solve problems lives with the people doing the work rather than above them. That is the thing we are trying to build.
The most dangerous phrase in a machine shop is “it should be fine.”
Should-be-fine is what you say about a part you have not looked at, a fixture you have not verified, and a process you have not proven. Gemba is the discipline of replacing it with: I went and looked. Here is what I found.

Three words built on the same character — 現, actual. Together they form the problem-solving method this shop runs on, and the closest thing we have to a company creed.

Decisions get made at the machine. Our engineers are not down the hall or in another time zone — they are standing at the spindle when the first part comes off, watching chip color and listening to the cut. When you call about a part, you are talking to someone who has had it in their hands.
genbutsu
the actual thing
We look at the part, not the report about the part. A print says ±0.0005; the part tells you whether the fixture is pulling the wall as it comes off the clamp. Every process here is proven on real material, in the real fixture, on the machine that will run it — not signed off from a simulation.
genjitsu
the actual facts
Data over opinion, and honest data over convenient data. Capability studies, tool-life records, and scrap causes are measured and shared — including when the numbers are not flattering. A supplier who only reports good news is a supplier you cannot plan around.
And the other half
A forge does not shape material. It changes what the material is.
Casting fills a shape. Forging works metal under heat and pressure until the grain structure itself aligns — and the part comes out stronger than the stock it started as. That is a deliberate choice of metaphor.
The Japanese verb 鍛える —kitaeru — means both “to forge” and “to train.” The same word covers tempering steel and developing a person. We did not invent that connection; we just named the company after it.
Put the halves together and you get the whole argument. Gemba: the answers are on the floor. Forge: pressure applied deliberately, over time, makes things — processes, programs, machinists — into something they were not before.

Kaizen is the schedule, not a project

Every program gets faster and more capable over its life. Cycle time, setup time, and scrap come down on parts we have run for years — because the people running them are expected to improve them, and are given the hours to do it.
Build the process, then the part

Anyone can make one good part. Standardized work — documented, proven, repeatable — is what makes the ten-thousandth part identical to the first. We invest up front in fixturing, tooling, and gaging so production is boring, in the best sense.
Stop at the problem
jidōka · autonomation
Jidoka: when something is wrong, the machine stops and so do we. We would rather hold a shipment and tell you why than ship suspect hardware into an aircraft. Nothing about a defense program rewards a supplier who hides a problem.
Respect for the people who cut metal

Machinists are the engineers of the shop floor. They train, they cross-skill, they own their cells, and they have standing to stop a job. The forge in our name is about what pressure and heat make of good material — including people.

Philosophy is only worth stating if it changes what you experience.
The person who quotes it has seen the machine
Quotes are reviewed by manufacturing engineers who work on the floor, not by an estimator applying a multiplier. That is why our quotes come back with a process attached — and occasionally with a reason we think the part should be redesigned.
You will hear about a problem early
Jidoka means we stop at the problem rather than shipping through it. In practice that sometimes means a call you would rather not get. It is still better than the call about hardware already installed on an aircraft.
Your part gets cheaper, not just older
Kaizen is scheduled work here, not a poster. Programs we have run for years have measurably lower cycle times and scrap rates than they did at launch, and we are willing to show you the trend.
You are welcome on the floor
Come walk the gemba. See your part being cut, meet the operator running it, look at the control chart. A supplier who does not want you in the building is telling you something.
